The last few weeks I have been fielding calls left and right from customers regarding a phone call from “Microsoft” stating that their computer is sending massive amounts of error reports and they are calling to help fix them so no damage will be done to their personal files.
This issue with this isn’t that you have possibly sent error reports to Microsoft about this or that program crashing on you, it’s that Microsoft would NEVER call you regarding them. And I mean NEVER!
The “Microsoft” representative gets you to bring up the Console Management Window and navigates you through the options to show you various errors that hardware drivers or software programs have prompted. Everyone on the planet who uses Windows will have these errors, and they pose no more of a threat than the clouds do by falling on your head. They are logs of what has happened, for diagnostic purposes.
They of course state they can help “fix” the problems if you will allow them to remotely connect to your PC. DON’T LET THEM UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!!
Once connected they install software that will not only infect your computer with Malware, but guess what, when you call the phone number or visit the website to purchase activation codes for the programs stating you are infected (you actually aren’t), you are paying the very same people who infected you. They also install a keylogger, so that it emails them all your passwords and usernames when you type them in to your banking sites, email programs, or anything you physically type. Shortly there after, they own your life until you figure it out, and likely is far to late.
So if you get a call regarding the above subject matter, simply hang up or tell them you use Linux. After their whole spiel that your “Windows” is sending error reports, they quickly hang up when you tell them you are in fact not using Windows. How odd…
Please get everyone you know to read this, as you really are helping your friend.
